The National Childcare Scheme (NCS) is Ireland's statutory program designed to assist parents in covering childcare expenses. It offers two types of subsidies for children aged between 24 weeks and 15 years:
-
Universal Subsidy: This subsidy is available to families of all income levels and is not means-tested. It provides €2.14 per hour for up to 45 hours per week.
-
Income-Assessed Subsidy: This subsidy is means-tested and calculated based on individual family circumstances, including income, the child's age, educational stage, and the number of children in the family. The maximum rate is €5.10 per hour for up to 45 hours per week.
To be eligible for the NCS, children must be between 24 weeks and 15 years old and attend a Tusla-registered childcare provider participating in the scheme. Parents can apply online through the NCS website using a verified MyGovID account or request a postal application by contacting the Parent Support Centre at 01 906 8530.
The NCS aims to improve children's outcomes, support lifelong learning, make work pay, reduce child poverty, and significantly reduce the cost of quality childcare for thousands of families across Ireland.
